Positive affirmations may or may not be on your radar… however I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some fun facts for you J

You may be one of those people who have tried PA’s a couple of times and not really seen much improvement, so you stopped as the value just wasn’t there. I hope this post is a revival on PAs for you, levelling up your mindfulness journey in recovery and ultimately your quality of life!

What exactly are positive affirmations?

They are a phrase or statement used to challenge a negative thought pattern. The benefit behind positive affirmations is to nurture your sense of self-identity, which is important to maintain and nurture in recovery. Self-integrity follows right after that, because you have an overall sense of being able to affect an outcome. In short it helps you nurture agency which is important in recovery; you have taken back control of your life, and you are providing the safety you need to move through life. You are connected to self and empowered to answer.

All that from positive affirmations! Yes, folks dynamite comes in small packages and positive affirmations are just that – dynamite.

What do positive affirmations do?

From a practical perspective they help you disrupt a negative thinking pattern and open a possible new route or thought pattern. With regular use, this new positive thought becomes a reality. Hopefully you have been reading my past posts and understand how and why this happens but if you haven’t let’s recap quickly on how this works.

Neuroscience now tells us we can retrain the brain and create new neural pathways until the day we die, which is wonderful news if you are in recovery and building new pathways for yourself in life! It’s like a well walked path, the more you walk it, the clearer and easier it becomes. The secret is to walk it often. It’s not about length of the practice but more the frequency of the practice to retrain and solidifying these new neural pathways! It is much the same for new positive thought pathways. Make then short and daily and you are guaranteed to have results, science says it’s so!

What comes from positive thoughts?  Positive actions!


It does take regular practice to feel the explosion however once that happens you are on the road to an increased quality of life.

Here are some ideas for positive affirmation I have used with my clients:

  • It is safe for me to be here.
  • I love my body and trust its wisdom.
  • I deserve pleasure in my life.
  • I embrace and celebrate my sexuality.
  • I accomplish tasks easily and effortlessly.
  • I honor the power within me.
  • I am worthy of love.
  • I am loving to myself and others.
  • I express myself with clear intent.
  • Creativity flows through me.
  • I am open to the wisdom within.
  • I can manifest my visions.
  • I am open to new ideas.
  • I am guided by my higher power.

Top Tip:

Post-it Notes are golden when it comes to positive affirmations. Personally, I put them on post-it notes in my bathroom so twice a day when I am brushing my teeth, I am reminded. Say it out loud or in your head and say it until you believe it. (Usually around 5 or 6 times in the beginning and then I have found a repetition of three to be my sweet spot.)

Have some fun with this and create your own, tailored to your needs and where you want to see or affect change. The world is your oyster here and dynamite truly comes in small packages.
